They didn’t pick it back up with the 3DS outside of the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program, which was only available to early adopters prior to the console’s initial price drop. Unfortunately, however, Nintendo dropped backward compatibility with the GBA lineup – at least on the DS family of consoles – after the DS Lite. The 3DS is a fantastic platform to play the Game Boy Advance’s excellent library of games. And as well as these consoles and games run on the 3DS and 2DS, they’re even smoother on the more powerful New 3DS and New 2DS consoles. Through emulators, the Nintendo 3DS can gain access to a whole range of previously unattainable games. When it comes to playing classic retro games – mainly, those from SNES and SEGA Genesis era and earlier – the 3DS is an absolute beast. Playing Emulators/ROMsĪs a quick disclaimer, we don’t condone the use of pirated software, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention this feature as it is one of the leading reasons gamers decide to hack their consoles in the first place.

This is merely an educational walkthrough of some of the different features that are available to those who decide to install custom firmware onto their 3DS. Doing so incorrectly could cause irreparable damage to the console. Note: This is by no means a guide to hacking the Nintendo 3DS family of handheld consoles. (And if any of these additional features don’t quite make sense to you at the moment, don’t worry as we cover each in more detail just below.) Suffice it to say, modding gives the handheld a second wind – making the 3DS definitely worth considering, even today. This is simply a brief overview of some of the most notable features that come with hacking a 3DS, but there are a ton of fantastic homebrew apps that continue to push the system beyond its perceived limits.
